Afinas'ev "The Peasant and the Corpse"

A story of a peasant that came upon a vampire. The peasant had been riding his carriage and rested on a grave and the grave and coffin began to open. The corpse was holding the coffin lid and was wearing a white shroud. The corpse ran to the church and put the coffin lid in the doorway of the church and then went to the village. The peasant took the lid and kept it from the peasant until the peasant told hi what he had done in the village. The corpse told him that he had killed two boys. The peasant demanded to know how to bring them back to life and the corpse told him. When the corpse was getting back into his coffin the cock crowed and the corpse did not have time to cover it completely. The peasant the next day went to the village and brought the kids back to life, but the villagers tied him up for the person that killed them in the first place. He invoked the name of God and asked if they believe. He then told all and they went to the corpse and drove an aspen spike through his heart so he could no longer rise up and kill others. the villagers gave him half their possessions and was rich.

Russian Fairy Tales: "The Vampire"

Story of a small town where the families gathered to celebrate the holiday of St. Andrew. The girls would gather together and dance and make food. All were good, but Marusia was the best. After a time a handsome man with a fine complexion and well dressed entered the house. He treated all the people at the celebration well and gave money to all. He danced well and like Marusia best of all. At the end of the night the man asked M to go for a walk and she did and he asked her to marry him. She asked where he was from and answered that he was a merchant's clerk. She told her mother and her mother told her to tie thread to a button and will then find out where he lived. She did as her mother suggested and followed the man the next night to where he was in a church yard standing by a coffin eating a corpse. She made a noise as she was climbing down and was afraid when she ran home, but didn't tell her mother all about it.
The next night they all went to the party and the man asked M to talk a walk again. She refused, but her friends talked her into it. She "put her faith in God." The man asked her if she was in the church yard the night before and saw what he was doing. She said no and he said, well your father will die tomorrow. her father was dead the next day. The next day all came to grieve with her including the vampire. He asked her to talk a walk again with her. He asked the same question and she said no and he said that her mother would die. The next morning her mother was dead. The same thing happened the next night, but he said that M would die. M went to her grandmother for advice. The old woman heard it all and suggested that she go to the priest and when she died the priest should dig a hole under the door sill and that she should be carried through it and to bury her at the crossroads. She went home after telling the priest all and found a coffin, climbed in and died.
When she was so buried there was a flower that appeared at her grave. A rich man's son saw it and be planted it in a pot in his house as it was the most beautiful flower he had ever seen. A servant did this and that night saw the flower turn into a beautiful woman that wandered the house. The son watched the next night and asked his parents for leave to marry her and they agreed. She made a condition that he would not go to church for four years and he agreed.
They got married and had a son. Then once the man told his friends that she never goes to church. The man then made his wife go to church and there was the vampire who asked M about the churchyard. She answered no and he said her husband and son would die. They did and M talked to her grandmother. The vampire went to M and asked her the same questions. She answered honestly this time and sprinkled holy water on him and then her husband and son with the water of life and the v died and the son and husband lived again and lived happily ever after.

Valerie Kivelson talk at OSU

Everything non-spiritual is demonic - not like in the west. The church saw it as demonic.
Orthodoxy is an attempt to make the impure pure.
Whether or not magic exists as real is not important. It is real for the believer and has real world consequences for them.
For the peasant - Dvoyoveria doesn't really exist. They are Orthodox and just retained a few things from paganism as if it is from Orthodoxy.
Magic was all pervasive on all fronts in society. Not actually evil, but not exactly good.
Magic is used to protect and gain.
Spells are not created for an audience of one God. They are created for the purpose of changing the user's reality - as it changes in real-time in the lives of Moscovy people - like the life of Jesus is lived in real-time for believers of Orthodoxy and for the new Jerusalem as Moscow under Ivan IV.
Spells use the traits of physical items, then the item is compared to a person and the person is meant to be affected from the inside. For example: "This root is bitter, may this person also be bitter."
Witchcraft in the west is from Satan, witchcraft in Moscovy is related to harm done to someone. The question then becomes who harms whom?
Like maps, Moscovy magic used metaphors. For example: Use a heart shaped flower to cure a heart.
Magic is used most effectively in the home - in the liminal areas: threshold, stove, sleeping alcove; clothing is used in magic often.

Cronos, 1993

Opening credits start with a church bell or a gong. Voice over of a back story. Story begins of 1536 after the inquisition - an alchemist searches for a devise that will give him eternal life - Cronos device. 400 years later in 1937 a vault in the building collapses and the alchemist was found.  The story was not told to the public and images shown of a man hanging upside down and his blood being drained out of him. The Cronos device was never found.

Mexico. A family eating breakfast. A little girl and her mother and grandfather. Grandfather and girl love eachother, the mother is stern with daughter. The granfather and and girl work at an antiques shop. A strange man comes in and looks at things and then when adked if he needs anything goes out. He was looking at statues. December 28th.
Once of the statues the man was looking at had an eye missing. The girls's name is aurora. Cockroaches come out of the cockroaches ete. It is assumed that the statue came from the ruins of the callapsed building. It is hallow and the old man lifts it off it's base and reaches in to pull out the cronos devise wrapped in a cloth. The cronos looks like a golden egg with small markings on it.

A man - ron perlman - ansers the phone and is given information about something he had been looking for. He goes looking for a man in a facroty. He enters a room deliverying a dinner tray and has put on a facemak and boots against infection and such. ron tells the man that the archabgel is garbage, but the man is ertain it is not garbage. Ron goes to pick up the egg and plays tricks with the daughter and asks which nose is better.

the granfather tells the girl that finding the god egg only happens once in a lifetime, then winds it and is cut on the hands ans these claws come out of it.

The old man goes to a woman that teaches dance. She clans his cuts and finds a metal filing in his hands. Calls it a stinger of a bee.

The old man wakes in the night thirsy and dringks a jug of water. He sees a plate with some meat on it in the fridge and looks loningly at it. Doesn't eat it and closes the door. Then he claws at his bandage and itches under it. He is in pain.

The girl is in bed with a green light under the covers. She hears the old man downstairs. He takes out the cronos and winds it again and it grabs onto his hand again. . He says an our father. A rod comes out of the egg and dips into his hand and sucks blood out. He is in extasy. the girls sees and the old man says he is ok.

Morning and the old man is looking in a mirror and has shaved his moustache. His wife says he is a lot younger looking.

He goes to his shop and finds the lock cut and all things scattered inside. Ransacked.  He finds a laminated card inside and it is for the factory where ron works. It says that they are open all night.

Old man, mr. Gris, goes to the factory. He finds the man who tells of how he has found the manuscrips of the alchemist and tells of the insect that lives inside the cronos, like the resurection of jesus. Gris gives the man a box with locks in it, not the cronos.

Ron tells gris that he may have the cronos for now, but they have the instructions on how to use it. . It must be used very specially.

Gris comes home and see that the cronos is gone and understands that aurora has it. He goes to her and tells how her father did the same thing to his cigarettes. She hid the cronos in a stuffed bear.

Gris uses it again on his chest. He has almost no marks on his chest after, but there is a sticky something. They go to New years ball. Aurora looks on and is not happy. Gris sees a man with blood coming off his mouth or nose and follows him to the bathroom - to get a drink. Gris tries to pool all the blood together, but a man comes out of the bathroom and washes it up. Gris then licks it off the bathroom floor. A man kicks him in the head.

New years! Gris is not at the party with wife and aurora. He is in a car with ron on the edge of the city. Ron starts to beat Gris and ask about it since his uncle the dying man won't leave him alone. Ron beats teh man and Gris wants Ron to end it, but Ron says he will do so when he pleases. He puts the old man in his car and pushes it off the cliff.

Inner dialoge gris. He says he is dying and alone and in pain, but can take a lot more than this. He remembers aurora.

Aurora in her room.

the morgue - Gris is being sown up for burial, but then it is decided that Gris wil be cremated.

Uncle and ron. Ron is beaten sicne he didin't check or keep from hurtin the old man's heart. Soemthing in the heart is important.

The old man's wake. Ron shows up and cheks his heart and if breathing as holds close his nose. The casket is cremates, but Gris is not in it by the end. Ron goes to check and sees it burning.

Gris is outside and cold and finds a newspaper and reads about his death. His name is Jesus Gris.

Gris calls his wife, but she hangs up at hearing just her name. Aurora hears also. Gris walks the streets in the rain. Gris goes home and Aurora opens teh door to him and brings him  a towel. He then lives in her attick. His closes are on backward. He attackes the cronos to his hand. sunlight comes through the ceiling and burns Gris with smke immediately. Aurora prpares a trunk  for him for the day.
He wakes and opens the trunk and writes mercedes a letter about going to finish unffinshed business and hopes to find her welcoming him back despite his looks. Aurora will give her the letter.

Gris goes to the factory. Aurora follows him with the green light stick and bear with cronos in it. They go to the top floor where the man sleeps. Gris wants to know why he is that way if he is to be.

The unlce wakes and tells that he ate the missing pages and tells gris to peal off his old skin. Gris tells that he has been reborn. Gris wants the answer to the riddle. Uncle tells that it is blood. Uncle tells that there is a way out and that he nees the cronos and Gris is about to give it when Uncle stabs him. Aurora saves him before the stab to the heart. Ron had been called and was about to go up. Gris tells Aurora to go, but then sees the blood and Gris starts to drink the blood from Uncles's neck Aurora watches, but ron shows up. and they grab their stuff and run.

Ron comes up and sees the uncle on the ground and the puddle of blood. ron laughs and says that everything is his and the uncle calls to him, but ron breaks his neck.

Gris hits Ron in the face and they go on the roof. Ron follows. Gris puts Auroa on the sign above the factory - neon sign. and she then clims down from there. ron and gris prepare to fight. Ron has a metal pole. Gris his fists. Ron beats Gris with the pole and kicks him.

Gris calls Auroa his angel.

Gris tells Ron that Ron has more to lose and that for him it is just pain. Gris grabs ron and jumps off the bilding. Aurora meets him at the bottom and put the cronos on his chest and Gris gets up. He has metal and glass sticking out of him. He pulls off his old skin. he sees that A has a cut on her hand and holds her.. she calls out to him "Grandfather and he yells NO and pulls the cronos off him and smashes it with a rock and he begins to die.

he recites" I am jesus Gris...JEsus Gris" and repeats it three times. He then lays down to die and is very pale skinned. Aurora lays on his chest. They are in her bed at home. Mercedes is there too. The happy famuly again. Fade out white.

Horror of Dracula, 1958

Christopher Lee as Dracula and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing.
Film ooens with a statue of an eagle. The credits are in Red - like blood and in old English style font.
Darcula's coffin with Dracula's name encripted on it. Blood dripps on it and the scene fades.
The journal of J Harker. Voice over. H walks the last few miles to the castle. There werer no birds singing there and it was said to be colder- It is daylight.  There is a cannon outside the castle in the foreground. He sees a door outside that leads somewhere and looks on it knowkingly.
The door opens to the castle perhaps on its own. It is offscreen, but it seems lilely that that is what they had in mind.
H walks into the castle which is really well lit - lik a 70's techinolar mfilm. He reads a note from D to eat and to dine by the fire.
H starts to unpack in the dinning room and is about to write in his hournal until he knocks over a tray and while he was picking things up a woman walks up silently. J says that he is the new librarian to the lady. The lady asks for hel and asks to be taken away as she is being kept prisoner. She then turns and tuns away as D shows up at the top of some stairs. He walks down to H. D offers to show the room to H. D is English in voice and has a unibrow.  D says that his care takeer is away on bereivement and so D carries H's suitcase upsarits for him. In H's room is cold. You can see the ir brethe while they speak. H is their to be D's Librariean and wants solitude to work on cataloging D's books.
H takes out his pictures of Lucy and D looks at it and gievs H a kep to the library and tells him to be at home. However, when he leaves H's room he locks the door from the outside.
H stats to write in his journal about meeting D. H writes that he knows D has acccepted him as a man to catalog his books, but that H only waits for daylight so he can end D''s reign of terror.
It is night and H is almost falling sleep when he sees the door to his room move a bit. He checks it and finds it is unleocked. He walks out and walks around and sees shadows moving in the castle. He follows them into the great hall. The door shits and he finds the woman from earlier who again insists that he help her. H wants to know why she wants him to help her. She is hysterical and calls D evil. She cannot leave on her own as d would find her. H promises to help her and she cries on his chest. Then she turns to his neck and is about to bite it when H pushes her away and D comes in and tears her off H. They battle and H tries to intervene and D detains him and pushes him down. D carries off the girl through the door and out. H passes out.
Daylight in the castle. H wakes in his room and the candle is smoking out. H looks to have a headache and checks his watch and the door, but the door is locked. he is locked in again. He goes to drink something, but remembers the night and hold his neck and sees the two bite marks from the woman in a mirror and is in despair. He opens his red book to write and notes that he has become a vidctim of D and the woman and things that he may be doomed. He can only pray that whomever finds his body will know what needs to be done to release his soul. He says he has lost a day and it soon will be night and must now do what he came to do and goes to search for the resting place of D and end his reign of terror. he places his book in a place where there is a statue of Mary. He knows that he does not have much time as they will walk soon.
he goes in the door he saw earlier and opens it and sees D sleeping. Blood drippping from his mouth. The woman is in a next voffin and seems to have a smile on her face.
