Russian Fairy Tales: "The Vampire"

Story of a small town where the families gathered to celebrate the holiday of St. Andrew. The girls would gather together and dance and make food. All were good, but Marusia was the best. After a time a handsome man with a fine complexion and well dressed entered the house. He treated all the people at the celebration well and gave money to all. He danced well and like Marusia best of all. At the end of the night the man asked M to go for a walk and she did and he asked her to marry him. She asked where he was from and answered that he was a merchant's clerk. She told her mother and her mother told her to tie thread to a button and will then find out where he lived. She did as her mother suggested and followed the man the next night to where he was in a church yard standing by a coffin eating a corpse. She made a noise as she was climbing down and was afraid when she ran home, but didn't tell her mother all about it.
The next night they all went to the party and the man asked M to talk a walk again. She refused, but her friends talked her into it. She "put her faith in God." The man asked her if she was in the church yard the night before and saw what he was doing. She said no and he said, well your father will die tomorrow. her father was dead the next day. The next day all came to grieve with her including the vampire. He asked her to talk a walk again with her. He asked the same question and she said no and he said that her mother would die. The next morning her mother was dead. The same thing happened the next night, but he said that M would die. M went to her grandmother for advice. The old woman heard it all and suggested that she go to the priest and when she died the priest should dig a hole under the door sill and that she should be carried through it and to bury her at the crossroads. She went home after telling the priest all and found a coffin, climbed in and died.
When she was so buried there was a flower that appeared at her grave. A rich man's son saw it and be planted it in a pot in his house as it was the most beautiful flower he had ever seen. A servant did this and that night saw the flower turn into a beautiful woman that wandered the house. The son watched the next night and asked his parents for leave to marry her and they agreed. She made a condition that he would not go to church for four years and he agreed.
They got married and had a son. Then once the man told his friends that she never goes to church. The man then made his wife go to church and there was the vampire who asked M about the churchyard. She answered no and he said her husband and son would die. They did and M talked to her grandmother. The vampire went to M and asked her the same questions. She answered honestly this time and sprinkled holy water on him and then her husband and son with the water of life and the v died and the son and husband lived again and lived happily ever after.
